Back in December, Brooke had a holiday party at her house. I specifically remember talking with one of her friends about Gals With Goals and potential goals for 2016. At one point during the conversation, I remember saying that I definitely wouldn’t set a running goal and explained that I ran track and cross country in high school, but due to many injuries, I still struggle to run long distances. So what did I do…I set a goal to complete a Couch to 5K running plan. HA! I purchased new shoes a couple weeks ago and decided to run the Celebrate Teaching 5K to celebrate, support, and inspire great teaching!
The Celebrate Teaching 5K is an opportunity to recognize all the outstanding educators, past and present, who have had a powerful impact on students, colleagues, and their communities. I’ve decided to run in honor of the teachers who have had a positive influence in my musical life; Roberta Lynn Holt for sharing her love of music and dance and giving me the drive to pursue the arts, David Keener and Catherine Keener Abner for recognizing my potential and encouraging me to major in music, Alison Brown Sincoff for instilling a love and passion for all things flute and higher education, John Bailey for pushing me to my technical limits and teaching me how to teach myself, and Valerie Watts for teaching me to find balance, let go, and be an artist. Lets do this!
April 1st: It’s April 1st, AKA April Fools Day and the realization is setting in that I need to get my butt in gear and start running. Perhaps I just played a really mean April Fools trick on myself. :/ I found a Couch to 5K running plan online at www.coolrunning.com and literally hit the ground running with Week 1, Workout 1, a brisk five minute warm-up walk followed by eight repetitions of 60 seconds of jogging and 90 second of walking. The weather was absolutely beautiful and it felt so amazing being outside after a long winter. I’m trying to ignore the fact that my right knee started throbbing by the end of round one. :/
April 2nd: I woke up this morning and assumed I would be so sore I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed. To my surprise, I felt great so I headed back outside for another workout! In typical Ohio fashion, the weather has taken a turn and it’s super windy today. I pushed through with the same workout as yesterday. We had dinner with Jon and Krista and then traveled out to Springfield for our evening concert. On the way, we talked about the workout plan. It didn’t take much convincing, but Krista suggested alternating workout days so that I’m only running three or four days a week.
April 3rd: I had originally planned to wake up early to run before our Sunday morning routine of Northstar and Trader Joe’s, but instead took Krista’s advice and settled on a day of rest. With my lesson schedule, my only options were to run really early in the morning or after 8pm. Neither were great options, so I’ll be back at it again tomorrow.
April 4th: After running in this windy weather, I feel like I’m coming down with a cold. I took some airborne and settled for yoga and stretching today.
April 5th: I managed to fight off the cold I thought I was getting and started my Week 2 workouts today. The weather is still miserable out, I don’t want to risk getting sick, and I don’t have time to drive over to Ohio Dominican to use a treadmill. As sad as it sounds, I decided to run laps inside my house. Yes, you read that correctly. I did a brisk five minute warm-up walk followed by six repetitions of 90 seconds of jogging and 2 minutes of walking. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade right?!?!
April 6th-8th: The cold weather continues this week so I’m left with stretching, yoga, ab workouts, and oh yeah, my week two workouts AKA running laps around my house. 😉
April 9th-10th: This is a flute-filled weekend! My advanced flute choir performed at the Central Ohio Flute Association’s Flute Day (COFA) on Saturday. We were able to hear some amazing flute playing, learn from our own performance, hear great lectures, and shop around the exhibit halls. Today is filled with the usual Sunday routine, practicing for upcoming performances, and many flute lessons. I’m looking forward to warmer weather and Week 3 workouts OUTSIDE! 🙂
